Pentagon Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released later this week.
