Chinese Government Condemns US of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Over Trade Levy Warning

Donald Trump’s most recent ultimatum to enforce an additional complete levy on Chinese goods has been labeled a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, per the China’s leadership.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry also stated that China could implement its own undisclosed “countermeasures” if the US President executes his warning, adding that the country was “not afraid” of a potential trade conflict.

On Friday, Donald Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to strengthen its rules for foreign shipments of critical elements, charging the Chinese leadership of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.

He also vowed to cancel a scheduled meeting with Beijing’s head of state Xi Jinping, which was expected to take place during a conference in Seoul before the month ends.

Trump’s comments on Friday unsettled stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 share index dropping 2.7%, marking its largest decline since April.

His comments reignited apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

This past spring, the respective governments had consented to eliminate significant levies on each other’s products, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the economic powers.

This left, United States levies on Chinese imports facing an added thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market incur a import levy.

China’s latest remarks – released by the relevant government department in the manner of official answers to press queries – reflected rhetoric from the peak of the latest commercial tensions.

The remarks condemned United States controls on chips and semi-conductors while justifying China’s own restrictions on exports on key elements as “standard procedures” to protect domestic safety and that of all nations.

“Using” import duty warnings is not the proper method to deal with the Chinese government,” the spokesperson stated.

“Beijing’s stance” on a import duty dispute has remained steady: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

Last week, Beijing announced it was tightening export controls on rare earths and further resources vital for cutting-edge industry.

This was seen as a important measure, as the nation handles about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in products such as solar panels and smartphones.

Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being seen by analysts as a strategy of strengthening positions in preparation for forthcoming discussions.
