Catherine's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers

Her Royal Highness has organised her annual festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with guests including members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a selection of carols, music and readings from stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The theme of the service, held in the atmospheric historic church on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a tumour, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the carol service.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Musical Talent and Access

Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, co-founded by the Duchess of Kent to widen access to music lessons.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be playing at the evening's event.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Among the guests will be individuals spanning multiple eras.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been festooned with custom-created holiday decorations, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be broadcast on television on December 24th.
